interview

Laszlo Schlindwein: Dr. Pfeiffer, why is it so important for men to know their testosterone levels?

Dr. Pfeiffer: Testosterone is the key hormone for men's health. It influences your energy, muscle mass, mental strength, and, of course, potency and libido. Starting at the age of 30, many men's testosterone levels begin to slowly decline. Getting tested early allows you to take countermeasures before noticeable symptoms such as fatigue, loss of libido, or weight gain occur.

Laszlo Schlindwein: Why do you specifically recommend that men over 30 check their values?

Dr. Pfeiffer: Starting at age 30, hormone levels begin to change slowly. It's not a sudden drop, but the annual decline of 1–2% adds up. Regular testing allows you to identify trends early and take action—be it through lifestyle adjustments or targeted therapies. This helps you stay healthy and productive in the long term.

Laszlo Schlindwein: How does a test for testosterone work, and what is important for accurate results?

Dr. Pfeiffer: The test is usually performed by taking a blood sample, ideally between 7 and 10 a.m., as testosterone levels are highest at this time. Accurate results depend on the blood being processed under optimal conditions—meaning no delays or improper storage. Furthermore, the patient should abstain from alcohol beforehand and have had a stress-free night, as both can falsify the results.

Laszlo Schlindwein: How does a laboratory physician ensure that the results are accurate?

Dr. Pfeiffer: As a laboratory physician, I oversee the entire process. This begins with blood collection, continues with storage, and ends with analysis. We use state-of-the-art equipment that is regularly calibrated to ensure the results are precise and repeatable. We also check for plausibility—for example, by comparing them with other hormone levels such as LH and FSH, which can also provide important information about hormone balance.

Laszlo Schlindwein: Which factors have the greatest influence on testosterone levels?

Dr. Pfeiffer: Stress is one of the main factors. Chronic stress increases the hormone cortisol, which inhibits testosterone production. Lack of sleep, an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and obesity also have a negative impact. Conversely, you can positively influence your levels through exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep.

Laszlo Schlindwein: How can optimal testosterone levels improve a man's life?

Dr. Pfeiffer: Men with healthy testosterone levels generally feel more energetic, have a better libido, and build muscle more easily. It also boosts self-confidence, reduces fatigue, and improves overall quality of life. Testosterone is a key factor in feeling physically and mentally strong.

Laszlo Schlindwein: What advice do you give to men struggling with symptoms of testosterone deficiency?

Dr. Pfeiffer: First, have your levels tested to establish a solid foundation. If a deficiency is identified, we can analyze the cause. Often, lifestyle adjustments are sufficient—that means more exercise, better nutrition and nutrient intake through the right supplements , as well as stress reduction. In more severe cases, medically supervised hormone therapy may be beneficial. It's important that everything is tailored to the individual patient's needs.

Laszlo Schlindwein: Are there environmental factors that negatively influence testosterone?

Dr. Pfeiffer: Yes, pollutants such as plasticizers, pesticides, and other chemicals can disrupt hormone production. Alcohol and smoking also have a negative effect. So, it's worth maintaining a lifestyle that's as low in pollutants as possible.

Laszlo Schlindwein: What would you like to say to men in conclusion?

Dr. Pfeiffer: Your health and well-being are in your hands. Testosterone is not only important for your libido, but also a key to your physical and mental strength. By having your levels checked regularly and taking active measures, you can stay healthy, productive, and confident in the long term.

Thank you, Dr. Pfeiffer, for the insightful conversation!
